Choosing Adoption

Spread the Word

Birth mothers who choose adoption for their baby are empowered to make their own decisions. When you choose adoption, we want you to make decisions that are best for both you and your baby. Our caseworkers are here to help you! Here are some basics when it comes to selecting the adoption option that’s a good fit:

Open Adoption Option

If you want openness, it is likely that you’ll start by looking at profiles of available prospective adoptive parents. You can choose the family and have the opportunity to meet them. In addition, you can start communicating with them, spending time with them, and plan the birth of the baby together. Then, after the baby is born, you can continue contact if you choose. It’s common for birth parents and adoptive parents to send texts or emails, exchange updates, and share pictures. Often there are ongoing meetings as well.

Openness can vary from one situation to the next. Your plan might be for just a little exchange of information and contact. However, you may plan for more contact and interaction over time if you choose.

Closed Adoption Option

If you want to, you can choose a closed adoption. The agency will then choose the best adoptive parents for your baby from among their waiting families. The adoptive parents will receive no identifying information about you, nor you about them.

Anonymous Surrender – Safe Delivery Option

In all states, there are laws allowing for the anonymous surrender of a newborn by his or her parent. This option is often referred to as ‘Safe Haven’ or ‘Safe Delivery’. Your baby goes immediately to an already-approved adoptive family. These laws are meant to provide safety for a baby who might otherwise be abandoned. If you feel that you might be at risk for abandoning your baby or feel that you don’t have any other options, please talk to someone about your rights under your state’s anonymous surrender laws.
