Four ways you can help orphans worldwide and women with unplanned pregnancies
Many families ask how they can give back to AAI’s programs, both domestically and internationally. Following, we’ll spotlight four AAI fundraising projects—along with information on how you can help!
Hosts of Hope
Millions of children around the world seek permanent families, yet a significant portion of these children are often overlooked. To guide older children (ages five to fourteen) who are too frequently left behind in successful adoption placements, AAI has established a hosting program known as Hosts of Hope.
Hosts of Hope facilitates connections between potential adoptive families and older children residing in orphanages overseas. Hosting programs are very successful, with nearly 100% of the children ultimately being adopted.
Through this exciting program, children come to the United States for two to three weeks and stay with host families; or, for some countries, families travel to the country and spend time with the children there. These families are most often open to the possibility of adoption. Our prayer is that a bond will develop between each child and their host family.
AAI has set a goal of raising $120,000 for this program, with funds covering travel expenses, children’s activities, health and liability insurance, and gifts for the children.
China Camp, February 2009: The next hosting program will take place in February 2009 in Beijing, China, where families will travel for a five-day camp. Up to 20 older orphans, some with minor special needs, will be a part of February’s camp. AAI is partnering with China Center for Adoption Affairs to produce this program, and funding remains vital; the cost of supporting one orphan for this special program, for example, is $1,000. The total cost to fund this program is $28,220.
Aside from the February 2009 camp, AAI plans to offer additional hosting opportunities for Russia, Ukraine, and Nepal in the coming year.

Embracing Ethiopia
Adoption Associates, Inc. has made a long-term commitment to sponsoring children in Ethiopia—a country where there are an estimated 4.8 million orphans. Funds are needed to both support the children living in the orphanages and to cover basic expenses for the new AAI office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Orphanages which house hundreds of children need support for its children. AAI sponsors economically poor family households by reducing their poverty and facilitating the education of their children.
AAI’s goal is to raise $35,000 in 2008, for both the office expenses and yearly support for orphanages and poverty-stricken households.
The children living in orphanages have been orphaned due to rampant poverty, disease, and civil war. Although the children are considered fortunate because they have a roof over their heads and the promise of food every day, they are still victims of the squalor of the third world, and they live in incredible poverty.
The children at the orphanages frequently lack the daily necessities that we take for granted, such as suitable clothing, medical care, blankets, books, cribs, walkers, and toys. For these children, even basic schooling is rare.

Our Call to Nepal
Did you know that 970,000 children are orphaned in Nepal, due to extreme poverty, war, parental illness or death, or other causes?
In late 2006, Adoption Associates, Inc. (AAI) opened an adoption program in Nepal, the seventh poorest country in the world. The orphanages AAI works with in Nepal’s capital of Kathmandu are struggling to provide not only adequate clothing and shelter for the children, but enough food as well. Consequently, many of these children are malnourished, which places them at risk of severe developmental delays and serious illness.
Additional donations are needed to hire more nannies to care for the children and to purchase baby bottles, infant spoons, bowls, food for older children, and clothing. Funds exceeding the project goal will be earmarked to make significant improvements to the structures of the orphanages. AAI felt called to begin raising funds to help care for these children in need.
This isn’t just a problem that our agency has heard about; it is one our clients have seen firsthand. Families traveling to Nepal to complete their adoptions have found many children to be malnourished. Since learning of this problem, AAI has partnered with another non-profit organization, as well as food and pharmaceutical companies, in order to provide these orphaned children with baby formula, cereal, and infant supplements. However, more formula is needed, as well as funding to provide for the children’s additional needs.
AAI is committed to raising $100,000 to ensure that these orphanages continually receive enough funding to help its children.

Birth Parent Video Project
Did you know that less than 2% of women who experience an unplanned pregnancy will choose adoption? It’s a startling statistic, but if you think about it, how many birth parents do you know? Part of the reason why so few women choose adoption is because, just like you, they don’t know other birth parents who have gone on to live normal, successful lives. In order to give these women stories from other women who have been in their situation, AAI has just produced a new birth parent video. This video follows one woman through her decision to plan adoption and highlights many other women of various ages and cultural backgrounds who have also chosen adoption.
Support is needed to help complete the funding for the video that will be used by AAI, crisis pregnancy centers, and other supporting agencies nationwide. Only $7,000 is needed to achieve our goal of $76,500.
