Off the Beaten Path

Have you ever been walking through the woods when you’ve come to a fork in the road? Both paths ahead of you seem equally interesting, equally beautiful, and equally likely to get you back to civilization. You can’t take both, so you’re faced with a choice.

In his poem, “The Road Not Taken,” Robert Frost writes about a similar situation: “I shall be telling this with a sigh / Somewhere ages and ages hence: / Two roads diverged in a wood and I— / I took the one less traveled by.” The forks in the road that Frost writes about don’t just apply to the woods. Life is full of decisions that bring us to a crossroads where we have to decide to either keep going down the same “beaten path” that we’re used to or to take a leap of faith and try a different road. This might be scary, and it might be an adventure along the way, but as Frost says when he concludes his poem, the fact that he took the road less traveled by “Has made all the difference.”

In this month’s newsletter, read about a teacher who could have continued on her same “beaten path” but took a leap of faith and successfully campaigned for a paid parental leave for adoptive parents in her district. Then read about a family that adopted three girls domestically and then took on the adventure of adopting three brothers from Russia. Finally, tune in to the new proposed tax credit for adoptive families and read about what’s happening at AAI.

If you’re standing at a crossroads right now, deciding whether to adopt a child or getting ready to petition for a change that will help adoptive families, I hope that you find the stories of the individuals featured in this month’s newsletter inspirational. Remember, the path that you decide to take could change your life forever, and maybe the lives of others around you, too, for the better.

Best Wishes,
