Update on Rumors of Russian Suspension

April 15, 2010

Rumors of a suspension of Russian adoption with the United States are now widespread. NCFA (National Council For Adoption) has confirmed with officials from the U.S. Department of State that the rumor of a suspension of intercountry adoptions from Russia to the U.S. is currently false. Intercountry adoptions are still being processed by the Russian Ministry of Education until further notice. The Minister of Education has NOT issued an order for suspension of adoptions with the United States at this point, nor have they released a statement.

It has been confirmed by JCICS (Joint Council on International Children’s Services) that a delegation from the U.S. Department of State, lead by Ambassador Michael Kirby, will travel to Moscow and conduct meetings with Russian officials on April 20, 2010. These meetings are to discuss an agreement between Russia and the U.S.
