February Adoption Program Update

February 19, 2008

For families just beginning the adoption process, we know that choosing an adoption program can be difficult. This update is a reflection of what is currently happening in all of our programs. Due to the nature of adoption, this information may change at any time, but we hope that this will help you to determine which program is best for you as you begin the adoption process.

DOMESTIC ADOPTION:

AAI had 124 placements through our domestic infant adoption programs in 2007. 77 placements were through our regular program, and 47 placements were through our African-American and biracial program. Currently, we have approximately 80 families waiting in our regular program and approximately 30 families waiting in our African-American and biracial program.

Families who are open to international adoption may want to consider our accredited and active Russia or Ethiopia programs as they are wonderful alternatives to our domestic programs.

INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION:

China Adoption Program:

The average process time for the regular China program is lengthening and is currently at 25 months. Families interested in adopting from China may want to consider our Nepal or Kazakhstan programs where waiting times are shorter than the regular China program.

Ethiopia Adoption Program:

AAI families welcomed home eight children from Ethiopia in the month of January. Currently, there are over 60 families in the process of adopting from Ethiopia. Interested families are encouraged to call for more information or schedule a free 30 minute in person or phone consultation to learn more about this program. Families interested in adopting boys of all ages and older children of either gender are especially encouraged to call.

Haiti Adoption Program:

There is a lot of interest in adoption from Haiti. The Haiti adoption program has flexible requirements, accepts single female applicants, and is one of the least expensive international programs. The time from submission of dossier to bringing your child home is approximately two years. Families can choose from waiting children that are available or have a child referred to them. View our waiting children page for current waiting children or call for more information.

Kazakhstan Adoption Program:

Our Kazakhstan program is continuing to be strong! We currently have a number of families in the process of adopting, and the program is very promising. Children available can be as young as seven months and are Eurasian, Asian, or Caucasian in appearance. Married couples and single applicants are accepted for this program, although there are some eligibility requirements related to age, medical history, and prior criminal histories. Families may be able to travel to meet their potential child in as little as four to six months after the dossier is submitted to the Kazakh government.

Nepal Adoption Program:

We are still waiting for the new adoption law in Nepal, which is expected to be very positive for future adoptive families. Children from Nepal are Asian or Indian in appearance and range in age from less than a year to six years old. Families interested in adopting from Nepal are encouraged to call for more information.

Russia Adoption Program:

Our Russia program continues to be very active with around 100 families currently in the process. The process time from application to bringing your child home is approximately twelve months. Families interested in adopting through AAI’s regular Russia program or our Waiting Children program are encouraged to call for more information.

This summer, we will once again have a Hosts of Hope program bringing older children from Russia to the U.S. for several weeks to stay with host families. Michigan families interested in hosting children (who will be approximately 7-12 years old) are encouraged to call for more information or complete a host program application.
