Adoption Program Update

September 11, 2007

For families just beginning the adoption process, we know that choosing an adoption program can be difficult. This update is a reflection of what is currently happening in all of our programs. Due to the nature of adoption, this information may change at any time, but we hope that this will help you to determine which program is best for you as you begin the adoption process.

DOMESTIC ADOPTION:

Michigan families are still needed for the African-American and biracial adoption program. Interested families are encouraged to call.

INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION:

China Adoption Program:

The waiting time from submission of dossier to bringing children home is increasing and is currently at 22 months. Families interested in adopting an Asian child may want to consider the China Special Waiting Children program or programs in Kazakhstan, Nepal, or Russia, where Asian, Asian/Indian, and Eurasian children are available.

China Special Waiting Children Adoption Program:

We received referrals in August and are matching children with waiting families in the China SWC program. Children that are not matched with families will be added to the waiting children section of our web site soon.

Ethiopia Adoption Program:

Our Ethiopia program is growing and several families are traveling this month. Due do a proposed change in Ethiopian adoption law, we are currently not accepting applications from single females. Families interested in adopting older children and sibling groups are especially encouraged to call.

Guatemala Adoption Program:

If you are interested in adopting through our Guatemalan program, we are still accepting families for infant boys. These families may transfer to the Guatemalan program from other AAI programs or from other agencies. These families would need to have a completed, approved home study, and have filed with USCIS. We will also consider new applicants who understand that Guatemala may close adoptions at any time. These families would need to be interested in and qualify for another AAI program so they could transfer to that program should the Guatemalan government close adoptions.

Haiti Adoption Program:

Please watch our web site for the reopening of our Haiti program! Plans are underway to launch this program in September or early October.

Kazakhstan Adoption Program:

There is a lot of interest in this program, and families are encouraged by the current stability of the Kazakhstan program. Potential children from can be as young as seven months and are Eurasian, Asian, or Caucasian in appearance.

Nepal Adoption Program:

Due to proposed changes in adoption law in Nepal, this program is currently moving slowly. However, the changes in the law are expected soon and should be very beneficial for future adoptive families. Families interested in adopting from Nepal are encouraged to call for more information and check the waiting children page for information on available children.

Russia Adoption Program:

Now is a great time to adopt from Russia—AAI is one of only twelve accredited agencies in the U.S.! Currently, there is a need for families for boys over the age of 18 months. We are accepting applications from families nationwide. Families with completed home studies are especially encouraged to apply.

Ukraine Adoption Program:

Our Ukraine program coordinator has just arrived home from this country and has information on several children who are currently available. Please call for more information on this program.
