Russia and U.S. Near Completion of Adoption Accord

Since the tragic April incident involving an adopted Russian child being sent back to Russia unaccompanied, a lot of reform has transpired between the two nations. An adoption accord is nearly complete. This important and historic work will pave the way for better processes for Russian children adopted into U.S. families.

Adoption Associates is currently working with five orphanages—an increase of three—in Ethiopia where children continue to come into care. We foresee many referrals of children in the coming weeks and months that will be matched with families currently in process, but there will soon be more children available than there are families with which to match them. We are looking for families who can provide homes for these children so they won’t spend an extended period of time waiting in an orphanage.

Rumors of a suspension of Russian adoption with the United States are now widespread. NCFA (National Council For Adoption) has confirmed with officials from the U.S. Department of State that the rumor of a suspension of intercountry adoptions from Russia to the U.S. is currently false.
