Why Choose India?

  • The children are generally healthy
  • Older and special needs children are mostly available
  • The ages range from two to twelve years old, boys and girls

Location

Various location in India including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Lucknow and Pondicherry.

Reason for Availability

Most are abandoned or orphaned.

Children's Situation

The children live in C.A.R.A. approved orphanages and foster homes in five (5) different states in India. They are all staffed with loving and nurturing caregivers.

Eligibility for Families

  • Only heterosexual applicants are eligible.
  • Married couples or single female applicants are accepted.
  • India requires that married couples need to have been married at least five years, and that each spouse not exceed fifty-five years in age.
  • Single women may also adopt, and they need to be between thirty and fifty-five years old.
  • There may be up to three children already in the home.
  • Each orphanage reviews families on a case by case basis, therefore, the eligibility information is a guide rather than a set of hard and fast rules.

Procedure

You will first submit a preliminary application to AAI, meet with a consultant for an International Adoption Awareness Meeting, and then complete your formal application. You will then complete your home study and your USCIS paperwork. Next you will prepare a dossier, which will be submitted to India. Some time thereafter, you will receive a referral. After guardianship is granted by India courts, travel plans are made. There will be post placement reports required for three years after the adoption. Finalization of adoption is required and will occur in U.S. court by private attorney.

Travel

The Indian government requires at least one of the adoptive parents travel to go get their child. We highly recommend that both parents travel together if at all possible to encourage bonding with the child. Parents stay in India for approximately five to seven days during which time the necessary paperwork is completed to bring the child back to the United States. A guide can be arranged for you while you are in India.
