We would classify our adoption experience as the fastest journey that took the longest amount of time. Looking back at it now it was easy, but during the process, it was stressful. We were an active couple looking to share our lives with a wonderful child of our own when the process began. What we found was that it felt like life was on hold while waiting for the process to be completed. You don’t book that vacation you wanted to go on or stray far from the computer just waiting to hear any news. The excitement of starting the process, frustration over how long the system takes, and wondering if it was ever meant to happen at all comes to an end when you take that beautiful child into your arms that you will call yours forever.

Domestic adoption was not for us as we were not looking to share our lives with another family through open adoption. We thought that Russia was for us until after almost a year of political issues and waiting for a referral changed our minds. We just wanted to be parents! As soon as we said that we were interested in switching to Guatemala, Adoption Associates brought joy into our lives. Angelo was a match for us. How can you turn down a set of big, beautiful eyes like that?

We were extremely impressed with the complete process. Our questions were answered in a timely manner, whether it be through e-mail or a phone call. The foster moms do a wonderful job caring for the children. The court system was a breeze as it was handled by a lawyer in country who knows the ins and outs of the process and helps to make things go very smooth. We went through the process with adoptive families from all over the country and from different agencies. It was nice to know that we had none of the complaints that some had when working with different agencies. This again was another sign of the wonderful job Adoption Associates does. In fact, all the areas of concern like the U.S. Embassy, U.S. Customs, and the related paperwork was easy. We moved faster through all phases of the process than some of the other families with other agencies. For this, we can’t thank Adoption Associates enough. They really have it together.

One word of advice: When you’re in your child’s country, be sure to see it and enjoy the people and customs. This will make you appreciate the adoption process even more.
